so, you want to be a rocker, huh? if so, then pinakamagandang magsimula kay elvis at sa beatles. pagkatapos nito, anything goes na… pwede ka nang makinig sa punk, heavy metal, classic rock, pinoy rock, folk rock and anything in between.april 1956, Elvis’ single “Heartbreak Hotel” became number 1 – “the message may not move you…” ika nga nina peter, paul and mary but what a song it was. sino ba naman ang matatouch sa lyrics na…
Well, since my baby left me,
I found a new place to dwell.
It’s down at the end of lonely street
at Heartbreak Hotel.
You make me so lonely baby,
I get so lonely,
I get so lonely I could die.
‘”Heartbreak Hotel” was recorded at Elvis’ first RCA session.
In an effort to reproduce the sound of his Sun Records output,
engineer Bob Ferris constructed an echo chamber out of tile
and glass in the hallway at the front of the building.
When RCA’s A&R representative Steve Sholes went back to
New York with “Heartbreak Hotel,” the label feared it was a
terrible mistake. It sounded nothing like any song on the
radio at the time. Five weeks after hitting the charts,
it was Elvis’ first #1 hit.’
heartbreak hotel defined the formal start of the reign of the king of rock and roll. you may debate about elvis’ lifestyle later on, but he started the fire…the song and the persona were the sparks that ignited that flame. to give you a perspective of how long 1956 was, ang minimum wage nung time na iyon sa america ay $1 a day.
Elvis Aaron Presley, January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977, Elvis charted more songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 than any other artist. (149), Elvis spent more weeks at the top of the charts than any other artist. (80), Elvis had the greatest number of consecutive #1 hits. (10), Elvis is second only to the Beatles in total of #1 hits. (18), Elvis has the second most Multi-Plaintum records (19), (The Beatles have 24; Led Zepplin has 13), Elvis has more Gold records than any other artist (81), (Barbara Streisand has 42; The Beatles have 41), Elvis has more Platinum records than any other artist (43), (The Beatles have 36; Barbara Streisand has 26)
fast forward tayo sa BEATLES… the beatles brought substance, class and a sophistication to rock music (they may not have known this at the time because all they were concerned about then were making songs and being arrogant). let me give an example:
before the beatles, ganito ang lyrics ng isang rock song na tungkol sa lost love (nakipag break si babae kay lalake)…
Bye bye love
Bye bye happiness, hello loneliness
I think I’m gonna cry
Bye bye love, bye bye sweet caress, hello emptiness
I feel like I could die
Bye bye my love goodbye
There goes my baby with someone new
She sure looks happy, I sure am blue
She was my baby till he stepped in
Goodbye to romance that might have been
pasok ang beatles, it became…
Your day breaks, your mind aches,
You find that all the words of kindness linger on
When she no longer needs you
She wakes up, she makes up
She takes her time and doesn’t feel she has to hurry
She no longer needs you
And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years
o, di ba? i rest my case.
