ONE HUNDRED DEMONS

ONE HUNDRED DEMONS ang tawag ni lynda barry sa libro niyang “one hundred demons” ay “autobifictionalography“. a book that is part autobiography and part fiction. ito’y isang graphic novel na ginawa through simple and achingly lovely cartoons. the type of artistic work that is so simple and elegant, you think it’s so easy to do. but if you look at the details, you’ll find out that hundreds of hours must have been spent doing each page. marami kasing mga detalye kaya masarap basahin ang gawa niya ng paulit-ulit dahil may nakikita kang bago parati. si lynda ang aking bagong idol na author. kung gagawa man ako ng libro tungkol sa buhay ko, gagayahin ko siya at ganitong style din ang gagamitin ko – part fiction, part autobiography at hindi mo alam sa storya kung ano ang tutuo at kung ano ang imbento lang.

  1. You know I’m not into graphic novels the way you are but if there is one that I would care to read, yes… I think this might be it. Pero pag binalikan mo ang story in the aftermath, you’ll realize she just told you a very poignant, if painful, part of her life.

I don’t know much to comment about the artistry but I can say she’s a great story teller.

Oo nga… this was a great find mylab. 😀

  2. bosing!!!

  4. matt groening’s in fact being bullied by lynda barry when they were at the university-just so that she could get her cartoons published. there’s a shade of jessica zafra in her. nakakapagdrowing nga lang si lynda barry. i could almost smell a philippine counterpart–and her name’s lynda barrio. bwahahahaha!

  5. forgot to say that lynda barry was just writing(aka drawing) what she knows–lumaki siyang hybrid storyteller dahil sa kanyang genetic predisposition–half pinay and everything else thrown in between. ‘yong angst ng isang uprooted immigrant-the nanay and the grandmother heightened her identity as just flotsam and jetsam–ito ang kanyang mode of expression–being tossed around by the waves of indecision caused by that mere dystopic ripple in the filipino diaspora.ang pagkakaiba lang is that she’s white as the texan sun–so may nakikinig sa kanya…

  8. You can see some sections of “100 demons” in salon.com. I used to watch out for them, weekly lumabas yoon at that time.

Before 100 demons she had other books and I think she even had a comic strip that was syndicated for some time. Maybe sa Village Voice, but I am not 100% sure about that.

    I like her a lot.

Her mother had a lot of baggage as a half-caucasian and I think that neurosis partly shaped Lynda.

  9. thanks, i actually have been to salon.com and i saw ms barry’s old cartoons. i’ve also been in the lookout for her other books now that i’ve finished reading 100 demons.

i love her stories about her mom and grandmother – i see scenes like that played out in a lot of Filipino-American homes here in california. i could identify with the silliness of her mom and her lola’s affection. all in all, a great read.

it’s funny how lynda puts in a lot of pinoyishness in the book – a lot of it, i am sure, hard for non filipinos to understand: the “aynaku” before every sentence and all the other strange pinoy words that she uses. that was really brave and i admire what she’s done. the fact that the book is critically acclaimed puts icing into the already great cake.

    take care,
    jay
